Time Duration Calculator

Use the Time Duration Calculator to measure the elapsed time between two local date-times. The result separates complete days, hours, minutes, and seconds and also shows total hours, making it useful for shifts, travel, projects, events, and recorded activities.

How to use this time duration calculator

Choose a starting date and time and an ending date and time. The tool calculates end minus start in your browser. If the end is earlier, the result is labeled as a negative duration. Both inputs are treated as local civil times on this device.

How the calculation works

A duration measures elapsed time rather than named calendar units. Each complete day contains 24 hours, each hour contains 60 minutes, and each minute contains 60 seconds. The remainder after complete days becomes hours, then minutes and seconds.

Local clock changes can affect real elapsed time. Because browser date-times use the device time zone, a daylight-saving transition may make a civil-time interval one hour shorter or longer than a simple clock reading suggests.

Formulas

Elapsed duration

duration = ending timestamp − starting timestamp

Unit relationships

1 day = 24 hours; 1 hour = 60 minutes; 1 minute = 60 seconds

Worked examples

One day and ninety minutes

From May 1 at 09:00 to May 2 at 10:30 is 1 day, 1 hour, and 30 minutes, or 25.5 total hours.

End before start

If the ending time precedes the starting time, the magnitude is calculated normally and a negative direction is reported.

Common uses

Work and activity records

Measure continuous time between clock entries, recorded starts and finishes, or personal activities. Subtract unpaid breaks separately when the question calls for paid or active time.

Travel and events

Compare departure and arrival date-times or determine an event's elapsed length. Confirm time zones when the two clock readings come from different locations.

Project planning

Express a continuous interval as complete days, hours, minutes, and seconds or total hours. Use working-day rules instead when only scheduled business time should count.

Accuracy and limitations

The calculation subtracts browser timestamps and breaks the magnitude into 24-hour days, hours, minutes, and seconds. It preserves direction when the end precedes the start.

Inputs use the device's local time zone. Daylight-saving transitions, an incorrect device clock, breaks, and separate-location time zones can affect interpretation.

Frequently asked questions

Is a duration day always 24 hours?

The breakdown uses 24-hour elapsed days. A local daylight-saving transition can change the timestamp difference between two civil times.

Can the end be before the start?

Yes. The calculator reports a negative duration so the input order remains visible.

Does this calculate business hours?

No. It measures continuous elapsed time and does not remove nights, weekends, breaks, or holidays.

Which time zone is used?

The date-time inputs use the time zone configured on your device.

Is the time duration calculator free to use?

Yes. NumUtility is free, requires no account, and places no limit on ordinary calculations.

Are my entries stored?

No. The calculation runs in your browser. Values entered into the tool are not sent to NumUtility or saved by us.
