How the calculation works

The arithmetic mean describes the center of a set by sharing the total equally across every value. It is widely used for grades, prices, measurements, budgets, and performance data.

An average can be influenced by unusually high or low values. When the data is skewed, compare the mean with the median or review the minimum and maximum before drawing a conclusion.

For 72, 84, 91, and 93, the sum is 340. Divide by 4 to get an average of 85.

Average monthly cost

Costs of 48, 52, and 65 total 165. The arithmetic mean is 165 ÷ 3 = 55.
