How to use this miles converter
Enter the distance in miles and select the desired output unit. Kilometers are selected by default. For a reverse conversion, switch the From menu to kilometers and the To menu to miles. The calculator accepts decimal distances and keeps the exact unit factors until display formatting.
How the calculation works
The international mile equals exactly 1,609.344 meters. Since one kilometer is 1,000 meters, one mile equals exactly 1.609344 kilometers. The often-used 1.6 estimate is useful for mental arithmetic but is not the full conversion factor.
A mile also contains exactly 5,280 international feet or 1,760 yards. These definitions apply to ordinary statute or land miles. A nautical mile is a different unit defined as exactly 1,852 meters and belongs in navigation and marine or aviation speed contexts.
A converted route distance describes the same length under a different unit label. It does not account for map projection, route changes, odometer calibration, elevation, or the difference between a straight-line distance and a traveled path.

Worked examples
Convert 5 miles to kilometers
5 × 1.609344 = exactly 8.04672 kilometers before rounding.
Convert a marathon distance
26.2 miles × 1.609344 = 42.1648128 kilometers. This is a conversion of the stated rounded distance, not a redefinition of an official course.
Convert 2 miles to feet
2 × 5,280 = exactly 10,560 feet.
Common uses
Road and travel distances
Convert trip, route, and road-sign distances into kilometers for international comparison. A converted road distance remains tied to the route used by the original source.
Running and cycling
Translate training or event distances while distinguishing a stated rounded distance from an officially measured course.
Maps and geographic reporting
Present statute-mile distances in metric units without confusing them with nautical miles or straight-line estimates.
Accuracy and limitations
The converter uses the international mile of exactly 1,609.344 meters, not a nautical mile or an historical regional mile.
Mapping tools, odometers, GPS tracks, and route databases may produce different source distances. Converting those values does not resolve the underlying measurement difference.
Frequently asked questions
How many kilometers are in a mile?
One international mile equals exactly 1.609344 kilometers.
How many feet are in a mile?
There are exactly 5,280 international feet in one international mile.
Is a nautical mile the same as a mile?
No. A nautical mile is exactly 1,852 meters, while this tool's mile is the 1,609.344-meter international mile.
What is a quick miles-to-kilometers estimate?
Multiplying by 1.6 gives a useful estimate, but use 1.609344 for the defined conversion.
Can I convert kilometers back to miles here?
Yes. Select Kilometer in the From menu and Mile in the To menu.
Does conversion make a route measurement more accurate?
No. It changes units only; the reliability of the source distance remains unchanged.
