How to use this kilometer converter

Enter a distance in kilometers and select a target unit. To convert in the opposite direction, change the source menu rather than dividing by a rounded result. Decimal and negative values are accepted; apply signs only where a direction, coordinate, or change makes that interpretation meaningful.

How the calculation works

The kilometer is an SI-derived unit equal to exactly 1,000 meters. The international mile equals exactly 1,609.344 meters, so kilometers are converted to miles by dividing by 1.609344 rather than multiplying by a shortened reciprocal.

Metric conversions are powers of ten: one kilometer contains 100,000 centimeters and 1,000,000 millimeters. Conversions to feet and inches pass through the exact meter definition, using one international foot equal to 0.3048 meter.

For maps and travel, confirm whether a displayed distance is a road route, surveyed segment, or straight-line estimate. Unit conversion cannot reconcile different routes or measurement methods, and a long decimal result should not imply greater geographic accuracy.

Formulas

Kilometers to miles

miles = kilometers ÷ 1.609344

Kilometers to meters

meters = kilometers × 1,000

Kilometers to feet

feet = kilometers × 1,000 ÷ 0.3048

Worked examples

Convert 10 kilometers to miles

10 ÷ 1.609344 = approximately 6.2137119224 miles.

Convert 3.5 kilometers to meters

3.5 × 1,000 = exactly 3,500 meters.

Convert 1 kilometer to feet

1,000 ÷ 0.3048 = approximately 3,280.839895 feet.

Common uses

International road travel

Convert metric road distances into miles when planning or explaining travel across different measurement systems.

Exercise and events

Translate running, walking, and cycling distances while retaining the source event's official unit and measurement method.

Mapping and large-scale measurement

Move between kilometers, meters, and customary units for map labels, reports, and general geographic comparisons.

Accuracy and limitations

A kilometer is exactly 1,000 meters. Conversion to miles uses the exact 1,609.344-meter international mile definition before display rounding.

Do not infer travel time, terrain, route accessibility, or map accuracy from a converted distance. Those require separate information and assumptions.

Frequently asked questions

How many miles are in a kilometer?

One kilometer is approximately 0.6213711922 international mile.

How many meters are in a kilometer?

There are exactly 1,000 meters in one kilometer.

What is a quick kilometers-to-miles estimate?

Multiplying by 0.62 gives a rough estimate. Use the calculator when the additional digits matter.

Can the tool convert miles to kilometers?

Yes. Change the From menu to Mile and the To menu to Kilometer.

Why is the miles result not an exact short decimal?

The exact definitions produce a repeating decimal when kilometers are expressed in miles, so a displayed result must be rounded.

Are entered distances sent to a server?

No. The calculation runs in your browser and the entered values are not stored by NumUtility.
